During their travels in May 2010, our project managers Anne Christoph, Erdmute Erben, and Matthias Strelow met Mr. Piyasena Gamage. As Minister of Indigenous Medicine, he was both in charge of and proved to be a true friend of homeopathy. He was trying to bring clarity to a situation that seemed quite desolate at the time.
In November of that year, however, there was a change of leadership. Initially, we had not felt all too unsettled, but the new Minister, Hon. Salinda Dissanayake, in fact did not call in the Homeopathic Council for quite some time. Together with the Minister, the Homeopathic Council is responsible for all questions regarding homeopathy in Sri Lanka
When in autumn, 2011, an article, highly critical of homeopathy, appeared in one of the renowned Sri Lankan newspapers, our local partners became quite wary of what the official stance toward homeopathy would be in the future. Together we decided to freeze the planned projects and to wait so as not to risk a ban of our activities in the end.
It came as a great relief to us all, when the new Minister did in fact call in the Homeopathic Council in November 2011, proving also to be a supporter of homeopathy as his predecessor had been. On a mission to India, he was impressed by the reports of the hospitals, the treatment success, patient numbers and cost figures. Back home at a second meeting of the Homeopathic Council, he announced fundamental changes of homeopathy in Sri Lanka in the near future. In the future, well-founded homeopathy training is to be offered for a new generation of Sri Lankan students in collaboration with Indian universities. And finally, Sewa Lanka and Dr. De Zoysa will be allowed to begin with the planned homeopathic first aid training.
We are very pleased over these new developments and like to offer our help and support.
Health Ministers of Sri Lanka take part in the World Congress of the League Medicorum
According to a report in "Life Positive" in January 2012, the new Minister for Indigenous Medicine, Hon Salinda Dissanayake, together with the Minister of Health, Hon Shri Rao Narender Singh, personally responsible for medical education, and other high-ranking authorities of Sri Lanka took part in the World Congress of the League Medicorum.
This certainly indicates a great interest and appreciation of homeopathy by the Government of Sri Lanka, giving much hope.
